How to design a website that has the ability to access a database?

I'm working on a project and i need to design a websites with ability to access information on the database i created using mysql workbench 5.2 CE and using PHP has the programming language in designing my website. Please how do i go about connecting the database and the websites? This is what i av been able to accomplished:

1. my database created with mysql workbench 5.2 CE.

2. create a web server using Internet information system

3. intallation of PHP.

My Operating system is a window xp pro sp2.
