Could Britain go to war with Argentina over the Falklands?

I just read on the internet that Argentina are yet again kicking off over the fact that they don't have the falklands and the British do. Apparently, we're willing to give it back, but the citizens don't want to go to Argentina and would rather be British. Is that true?

Is this all just another pointless diplomatic problem we bring upon ourselves for no apparent reason what so ever, apart from wanting to feel 'powerful'?Could Britain go to war with Argentina over the Falklands?
"There was a British settlement on the Falklands long before Argentina even came into existence. Before that time the place was uninhabited."

Nope, quite untrue - see below.

"I don't see how can we 'give it back' when it's never belonged to them"

It never originally "belonged" to the British either!

It was the French that founded the first settlement on the Falklands in the 18th century - the British "claimed" the islands several years later, apparently unaware that the French were already there. The Spanish then acquired the French colony and put it under control of a governer who reported into the Buenos Aires colonial administration. The Spanish then expelled the British in the late 1700s.

So basically, the British were "squatters" - unintentionally maybe, but squatters nevertheless.

Given that Argentina subsequently became independant from Spain in the early 1800s, it explains their belief that they should still hold the islands. The British claim seems to extend to little more than "well, we didn't know someone else was here when we got here, but we're British so we should still have it anyway".

Sorry "thumbs down", but those are the facts - don't blame me because you don't like the history (but you'd do yourself more good by actually finding out about it rather than covering your ears and saying "I don't hear you! WOOOOOO!!!!"). Keep on thumbs downing....follow the flock, sheeple.

By the way, George, its spelled "FALKLAND" not "FAWKLAND". I suspect that I may have "GOTCHA" there, don't you?
Jesus Christ, I hope not. I'm half Argentine, half English (my dad's english, I'm born and raised in Argentina). I don't think our absolutely USELESS pesident Cristina Kirchner is THAT stupid. At least, I hope she isn't. Seriously? Britain would whipe out Argentina in seconds. God, is there is a war, my family will have to move. Fast.Could Britain go to war with Argentina over the Falklands?
Of course not! The UN or NATO would step in long before there would be a war...
I don't see how can we 'give it back' when it's never belonged to themCould Britain go to war with Argentina over the Falklands?
Its all sabra bashing, the argentinian government are trying to divert attention from their own serious political problems!
We have no aircraft carriers now and our forces are seriously depleted due to government cuts.

We would have no chance of defending the falklands or fighting another war to re take them should Argentina wish to invade.
Yes its hghly likely that the argentinians will attempt to take the falklands by force again. which will result in argentina getting its big fat grocho butt kicked again...
Read some history to understand what is happening. It would do you some good.
If so, it will be over in time for tea.

As to not knowing what happened in 1982, I wasn't alive during the French Revolution, but I still know what happened.
You need to ask will Argentina go to war. The UK will wait, Argentina are not really in a state to start anything. They are creating a fuss to get attention and want the oil in the area. The British Islanders will be forced off if Argentina ever take control.

Argentina knows what happens to its ships if they try anything.
There was a British settlement on the Falklands long before Argentina even came into existence. Before that time the place was uninhabited.

Argentina tends to rattle the patriotic sabre whenever it has domestic problems to divert attention - it even went as far as having a ceremony and digging up Juan Peron back in 2006.

As succesive UK Governments have said - the people of the Falklands are the only ones who have the right to decide their future, not some hot aired Politician in Argentina.

The Garrison now on the Falklands is somewhat larger than the 35 Royal Marines of 1982. The chances of Argentina actually invading again are remote.
You bet ! What an opportunity or this lame Government to divert attention away from their incompetence.

War in Iraq under false pretences.

Afghanistan costing a fortune in life and money we have not got.

British industry gasping for breath, unemployment rising, riots on our streets, rich cashing in, poor bleeding out, ineffective police, cuts, cuts, cuts, rejection from the EU and pocket lining Governments.

The Empire has gone!

No more wars please.
Britain will not go to war with Argentina over the Falklands. Argentina will have to attack first in order to gain the Falkland islands and Britain would then be acting in self-defence.

Britain's position is simple. We recognise the right to self-determination of the islanders and will support their choices.
Unfortunately, yes, we could. When Thatcher, the then British PM, was in serious political and economic difficulties at home, she went to war with Argentina in order to divert attention from problems in the UK. Cameron, who now faces similar problems, and has the same politics as Thatcher, could do the same to try to boost his popularity.
The Fawklands are British and should remain so. Why are people saying otherwise?

The first people to set foot on the Fawklands were the crew of HMS Welfare in 1690 who's captain John Strong was English.

A Frog in 1764 founded the first settlement on the Fawklands HOWEVER it wasn't claimed for the French at all despite the settlement. Britain as it was then claimed the islands 1 year later and established a settlement on the Fawklands. Not knowing about the French presence because the French hadn't claimed the Fawklands even by this time.

So there you have it, the first person to set foot on the Fawklands - British. First claim - British. And despite all the pissing in between by the French, Spanish and then for some reason Argentines. The Islanders speak English, are British and want to remain part of the UK.

So whats wrong with the Argentines? There must be something in their drinking water. The proximity of the Fawklands to their country doesn't automatically make it a part of Argentina.
Were you under a rock in 1982?
